Porsanger fjord, Finnmark, on the road to the North Cape · Treasure trolls turned to stone

The Petrified Trolls of Trollholmsund

The Petrified Trolls of Trollholmsund

Silver. Chests upon chests of it, carried across the Finnmark plateau by a band of trolls looking for a safe place in the mountains to bury their treasure. But people had seen them, and people were following.

The trolls fled towards the Porsanger fjord. The tide was high, the crossing slow, and behind the mountains the sky was turning pale. You already know how this ends. The sun rose, and every troll on that shore turned to stone, silver and all.

They are still there. At Trollholmsund, tall white dolomite pillars stand by the water: rock some 700 million years old, wearing a legend told the Sámi way. If your journey continues towards the North Cape, you can stand beside them yourself. The trolls won't mind. They are very patient.
